So many proposals, frameworks, and ideas have been brought forward that scholars had to systematically analyze them, particularly those relating to “ethical frameworks”, e.g. [117, 121]. Ensuring accountability in conversational AI is not only an ethical imperative but also a means to mitigate risks. It helps to maintain user trust, protect against biases or discriminatory outputs, and uphold ethical standards throughout the AI development and deployment process.
“At a superficial level, we want transparency about how these decisions are made. The more sophisticated consideration is the role design has in helping make the authoring and auditing of AI more easy, accessible and transparent,” he explained. Privacy tends to be discussed in the context of data privacy, data protection and data security, and these concerns have allowed policymakers to make more strides here in recent years. For example, in 2016, GDPR legislation was created to protect the personal data of people in the European Union and European Economic Area, giving individuals more control of their data. In the United States, individual states are developing policies, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), which require businesses to inform consumers about the collection of their data. This recent legislation has forced companies to rethink how they store and use personally identifiable data (PII).
Responsible AI Practices
They obviously implement different understandings of what fairness means and have different properties. Designers aiming to improve the ethicality of their AI systems therefore need to carefully consider the different approaches and ensure appropriate design choices. By embracing responsible AI, organizations can address the ethical implications of AI development and deployment. It helps prevent AI bias, promotes transparency and fairness, and ensures that AI systems are developed and deployed with the well-being of individuals and society in mind. The implementation of responsible AI is crucial in shaping the future of AI, allowing for ethical development practices and fostering trust in conversational AI systems.
While the frameworks provide a list of ethical objectives, it is far from clear how to realize them and translate them into operationalizable actions [116, 119]. Not only will principles allow for very many different designs, they also do not always lend themselves in a constructive way for designing implementation details. They are principles precisely because they are formulated free of any specific context. Therefore, important questions arise within the concrete context of an application as well as the organizational and social context .

With every disruptive, new technology, we see that the market demand for specific job roles shift. For example, when we look at the automotive industry, many manufacturers, like GM, are shifting to focus on electric vehicle production to align with green initiatives. The energy industry isn’t going away, but the source of energy is shifting from a fuel economy to an electric one. Artificial intelligence should be viewed in a similar manner, where artificial intelligence will shift the demand of jobs to other areas. There will need to be individuals to help manage these systems as data grows and changes every day. There will still need to be resources to address more complex problems within the industries that are most likely to be affected by job demand shifts, like customer service.

Failing gracefully is one of the most important takeaways in conversational AI development. With both context and personalization, flows can be streamlined, especially for returning visitors.

For example, I interviewed a leader from a major tech firm whose client had difficulty preventing their agents from saying the “wrong things.” With the chatbot, it could only say what it was programmed to do and helped maintain compliance.

By actively collecting and analyzing user feedback on the system’s outputs, companies can identify and address instances of bias, preventing the reinforcement of biased behavior. Implementing Responsible AI is not only an ethical imperative, but it also makes good business sense.
The conversational technology we imagined controlling our spaceships is now controlling our homes and devices — but we risk letting it control us. This technology should allow us to be more human but there would be nothing less human than allowing ourselves to be reduced to mere data points. As consumers,we shouldn’t accept that and as technologists we should certainly not enable it. Some of you may be thinking that it won’t be a problem — you don’t want to talk to a computer when you phone a call center. For the most part we are very aware when we are speaking to a computer and not a human, but Google Duplex showed that the Turing test can be passed, if you don’t know you are participating in one. Its natural speech and mannerisms caused outrage — people do not like to be tricked.
For example, if one calls an airline after booking a flight, the IVR knows this information and can prompt the user if they are calling about that flight — thus helping move the conversation along faster. Semantic Similarity groups similar messages together based on the meaning and not just the words themselves. For example, in the graphic below, both requests for refunds and wanting money back are grouped together based on the meaning, even though the words are different. Conversational interfaces are used across a wide variety of industries and use cases. While customer service is a common theme, there are plenty of additional use cases across enterprises in financial services, healthcare, insurance, travel, retail, government, education, HR, and more.
For example, Saltz and colleagues [131, p. 205] propose five steps from the business case to data understanding, modeling, evaluation, and system deployment. Morley and colleagues  add a business case development phase instead of data understanding, split modeling into a training/test data procurement, and an AI application building phase. With a focus on the underlying epistemology, Prem  starts with the problem domain whose properties lie behind an epistemic boundary. The next steps are (1) the creation of data, (2) understanding of the data (the epistemic domain), (3) pre-processing and formatting it to make it fit for (4) the creation of an AI model. Test and evaluation (validation) of the developed AI model (5) conclude the process. Combining these approaches results in the following process segmentation into nine steps from developing the business case to continuous monitoring (Table 4).

Through careful design, development, and monitoring, Responsible AI can help identify and address any potential biases in AI systems. By promoting fairness, Responsible AI can contribute to a more equitable society. While a lot of public perception around artificial intelligence centers around job loss, this concern should be probably reframed.
More people would prefer not to speak to a human than would refuse to speak to a chatbot. We are moving to a point where we expect businesses to provide us with ways to interact that don’t involve humans. To put principles to practice, linking them with more tangible system requirements is crucial. However, this phase is not just a mere translation; rather, it will mean research and development of tools, techniques, and technologies in their own right. By prioritizing fairness in conversational AI, companies can promote equal treatment, enhance user adoption, and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable AI ecosystem.

We stand poised at a time when technology permeates every part of our lives and the pace of change grows ever more rapid. A dozen years ago, we didn’t have smartphones, and now we can scarcely imagine life without them. Conversational technology will surprise and delight us with how human it can be, but we need to remain conscious of its impact. Those of us creating the technology need to ensure that we understand the impact and that we understand what other people want from their work. We shouldn’t base our decisions on our own judgements of forms of work that are and are not worth keeping.
